Careers

Are you looking for an opportunity to take your environmental consulting career to the next level and have more control over the future of your work? If you have experience working with contaminated land and you’re interested in a role that gives you:

  • A diverse selection of work on a day-to-day basis.

  • An uncapped earning ability with the opportunity to take home much more of every billable hour.

  • And plenty of company support for continuous professional development.

Then this might be the right opportunity for you.

We’re always on the lookout for site contamination specialists to join our nationwide team, and our collective business model is designed to prioritise team satisfaction and client results over maximising profits.

Why Join HAIL Environmental?

The Opportunity

Working at HAIL Environmental gives you the freedom and earning potential of an independent consultant, with all the benefits of having a supportive team at your side.

We have plenty of work throughout the country, and we focus solely on site contamination related to HAIL land uses. Our services are wide ranging - from preliminary site investigations, to soil sampling, remediation, project management, and more.

And you get to do it all.

We operate under a collective business model that’s designed to give experienced consultants what they need to get the most out of work: financial upside, flexibility, work satisfaction, and ongoing education.

We understand that leaving a comfortable job to become a contractor can be a significant leap, so we’re here to help make the transition smooth and low risk, and help you to develop your local client base over time.

If you’re the right fit for the role, we’ll provide ample support to help you at every stage.

The Benefits

  • You get to keep the majority of every hour you bill, and you earn extra income for bringing in new client projects.

  • Your day to day work includes everything - from PSIs to site visits, remediation and more. No pigeonholing.

  • Set your own schedule, avoid the office commute, and have the autonomy to make it work for you.

  • Wherever possible, we aim to ensure that work is carried out by the local consultant, rather than expecting you to travel long distances to get the job done.

  • We operate under a flat management structure and focus on what really matters. No managing director. No office politics. More time to be productive.

  • Working at HAIL Environmental gives you the freedom to be your own boss and develop your own local client base, while benefiting from the recognition of our brand and reputation, workflow, knowledge, shared overhead pool, and support of a nationwide company.

  • We provide plenty of funding and organisational support so that you can attend industry events, networking opportunities, and training. We’re committed to helping you advance your skillset.

  • For the right people, we provide the opportunity to become a partner and shareholder in HAIL Environmental when the time is right.

Our Values

Our organisational values are environmental responsibility, business agility and technical excellence:

  • Environmental Responsibility Icon HAIL Environmental

    Environmental Responsibility

We take our commitment to preserving the environment seriously. Aside from operating out of home offices and spending our days fixing contaminated land problems, we approach our mahi with environmental stewardship in mind.

We’re constantly looking for better ways to implement sustainable solutions on client projects, and we avoid ‘dig and dump’ wherever feasible. We use specialist equipment to reduce repeat site visits, and we endeavour to have each consultant working on local projects to reduce carbon emissions from travel. We’re also a member of the Sustainable Business Network.

  • Business Agility Icon HAIL Environmental

    Business Agility

Our collective business model is designed to be agile and solutions focused, and our culture is one of mutual support. Client results and great service are at the heart of everything we do, and that extends to how we treat each other.

We don’t sweat the small stuff. We help our colleagues, and we come together to provide more valuable outcomes when the need arises. We have the autonomy and trust in each other to provide timely solutions without layers of management approvals, and the wider team support to ensure that we’re doing things properly.

  • Technical Excellence Icon HAIL Environmental

    Technical Excellence

We’re constantly investing in our people by funding opportunities to attend industry events and training. Every consultant is a site contamination specialist, and we’re all Certified Environmental Practicioners (or applying to become certified).

Learning is a journey, and we’re intentional about creating the space to enable your continuous professional development. Collectively, we have more than 100 years of site contamination experience, and we have more site contamination specialists on our team than any other organisation in the country.

Flexibility Is Only The Beginning

“Initially, I was attracted by the flexibility that HAIL offered, but I got more than I bargained for. I have found myself supported by a team with a wealth of technical knowledge and expertise who are not only committed to my professional development but also to the industry as a whole. The projects I am involved in are diverse and interesting, and I particularly resonate with HAIL’s focus on sustainable remediation. HAIL punches well above its weight within the contaminated land industry in New Zealand, and I am proud to call myself part of the team.”

What We’re Looking For

Here’s an overview of what we’re seeking in new team members:

  • You have experience working with HAIL classified land. Ideally, you are a Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP-SC), but this is not essential - we can help you to get there.

  • Our ideal team member is someone who has worked in corporate consultancies for decades and is looking for a new opportunity. This isn’t a requirement, but we find that people who are moving from a larger firm seeking a better work/life balance tend to be a good fit.

  • You are independent, self motivated, and good at managing your own time. You won’t have a supervisor telling you what’s required or billable performance targets, so it’s critical that you can manage your own efforts independently.

  • Whilst we’re constantly communicating with each other and sharing ideas on client projects, providing mutual support, and meeting in person when opportunities arise, you will be working remotely on a day-to-day basis. This isn’t suitable for everyone, but if this works for you, please reach out.
